THE SECRET WEAPON THAT SHOCKED THE 1989 WORLDS
At the 1989 IFMAR 1/10 Off-Road World Championships in St. Ives, Australia, Masami Hirosaka drove the revolutionary RC10 “Stealth” prototype to victory. Designed in secrecy by Team Associated, the car featured the groundbreaking Stealth® 3-gear transmission, delivering smoother and more efficient power than the older 6-gear system. Combined with a lightweight chassis, Reedy motor, and Masami’s smooth, aggressive driving, the RC10 Stealth dominated the world stage.
Masami’s win wasn’t just another title — it changed the future of RC racing. The Stealth transmission became a core design for future Associated vehicles, and this moment remains one of the most iconic in RC history.
MASAMI HIROSAKA: RC’S UNDISPUTED LEGEND
Widely regarded as the greatest RC driver of all time, Japan’s Masami Hirosaka claimed 14 IFMAR World Championships across 2WD, 4WD, on-road, and touring car categories — a record that still stands. He also won more than 50 Japanese National titles.
From his breakout win in 1987 at age 17, Masami was known for his precision, consistency, and deep technical knowledge. Working with brands like Yokomo and Team Associated, he helped push RC tech forward and inspired generations of racers. Today, Masami continues to serve as a mentor and ambassador for the sport.
THE 1989 STEALTH CAR: BUILT TO WIN
The 1989 RC10 Stealth Car was a pure competition machine — a purpose-built prototype for world-class racing. Its most notable innovation was the Stealth® transmission: a compact 3-gear system with internal slipper clutch that offered superior efficiency and handling compared to the original 6-gear setup.
It featured a narrowed CNC-machined aluminum chassis, optimized suspension geometry, and extensive use of lightweight materials like titanium and carbon fiber. Though never sold as a full kit, this car laid the groundwork for future Team Associated designs.
